My method is to write out long hand twenty to forty pages and then type up what I've written on my laptop. I try to keep revisions to a minimum. When that gets tiring I will try and compose on the laptop, but I find if I am getting in deep, I must unplug and get out paper and pen to connect to the characters.
I listen to music to begin and for inspiration.
My novel is set in ancient Norway. Here is some music I found inspiring. The Hardanger Fiddle is Norwegian. You can hear it in the "Riders of Rohan".
